Vital Statistics Age: 7-8 years old |
Over the 4 years , Tex has proven to be a loving, devoted, sometimes sooky, affectionate dog who loves chasing a tennis ball at any opportunity & going for long walks and swims in the Hawkesbury River. I'm sure he also wishes he could be a lap dog as he loves pats & cuddles & will try to climb up & onto you given the chance which is hysterical given his size! Unfortunately Tex has also had a couple of incidences with the same little child (approx 2 to 3 years old), where he has bitten them (& drawn a small amount of blood) on 2 separate occasions - we weren't at the scene at either time, so we don't know how this occurred or what made him react this way. He also isn't very tolerant with small children. This has made us concerned as we now have a 15 month old ourselves for which Tex has been fine with him so far, besides one little growl when approached unexpectedly, but at the same time we keep a close eye on things when he or other kids are around. Tex really doesn't like (unpredictable) little kids near him & will only show interest if they have a tennis ball to throw to him (he will do this with no concern to the child for as long as they want). At no time have we considered putting him down for the above reasons as he a great dog for the right family. Tex is also a dog who will play fine with other dogs (male or female), but only after an introduction to show that all is ok. He has been known to show some other dogs 'who's boss', but has never hurt a dog (apart from their dignity)... he also 'flirts' with pretty female dogs by standing up tall with pricked ears & a smile! (but fortunately doesn't hump). He is ok on a lead, but needs to be 'checked' often & will heal when told without a lead. He is also fine with free range chooks, but finds cats fun to chase - not harm (however he has also had a cat as a buddy with his past owners). At Christmas time he had a swelling of his ear, which has left him with one floppy ear. He also is bilingual as his past owners were Latvian & so he responds to 'Sit' or 'Sedi' as well as 'Ball' or 'Boomba' (that's all we remembered!) In saying all of that, if we could find him a good home with older children/adults, then we believe it may be a better life for him (also read: peace of mind for us... re the 'what if'....), however we couldn't bear for him to go to a home that couldn't show him a similar level of love / lifestyle etc that we offer. It is a really hard (& emotional) decision to make as we know that with the right level of training & discipline he would be fine, but we have not been able to show consistancy, which has led to Tex getting away with things.
